Andriy and Taras Kogut from Blue Bay Cheese are two new faces you might have seen at Kosherfest 2009. They are identical twins from the Carpathian Mountains in the Ukraine, with a yummy, fresh, kosher product, and a great story. Growing up in a rural agricultural community, on a small farm, they learnt the art of cheese-making from their grandmother who believed in the health benefits of fresh yoghurt. She milked the cows and the goats herself, taking great pride in having fresh yoghurt and cheese on the table everyday.
"Blue Bay" yoghurt and cheese has a unique distinctive homemade freshness and quality. Andriy points out that "Europeans recognise and value the tangy freshness of live cultures on the tongue and taste buds. Our style is old fashioned and simply natural with no additives at all, and the yoghurt is authentic peasant style, slightly runny in texture. We use high quality Mornington Peninsula milk from good quality pastures, which is part of the secret."
"Australia has welcomed our family to this country and we are grateful the public appreciate the difference in our yoghurts and cheeses."
Andriy and Taras arrived goggle-eyed as new immigrants on the Mornington Peninsula five years ago and were so blown away by the blueness of the bay that they came up with the name "Blue Bay" even before they had a business or a factory. Like so many new Australians, their family has brought knowledge, skills and culinary diversity which have enhanced the food landscape of Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula.
"We have grown up in a childhood of sharing in a simple agricultural society. We have chosen to use simple natural techniques for all our fresh cheeses and yoghurts. Everything is controlled by hand, not computers, and we use no preservatives, which means we work hard, for small batches. Both of us love the feedback from the public, and our customers have become part of our adventure."
The Blue Bay retail outlet is located at 1/6 Latham Street, Mornington.
